A notre époque, les formats musicaux n’ont plus de normes et tant mieux. Le sous label de Get Physical, Kindish le sait et nous propose leur dernière sortie avec un concept compilation/album pour nous plonger dans l’univers musical de Ben Hoo. Ce jeune producteur londonien s’est fait remarquer avec ses excellents remixes pour M.A.N.D.Y & Booka Shade, Tiga et Moby. Ne s’étant jamais ancré dans un style particulier, il explore avec brio, en l’espace de trois remixes trois styles différents. Grand amateur de manipulations sonores et créateur de sons synthétiques, il est toujours en quête de savoir dans le domaine de la production et étudie le piano et la batterie afin de formaliser sa composition musicale.

Habitué à la production de remixes, l’album / compilation « Collected » est le premier essai de Ben Hoo en terme d’explorations sonores. Il regroupe les titres Marea , Modal et Maledictum déjà sortis sur différents EP. Il nous démontre que l’univers musical de Ben Hoo se situe toujours aux frontières très floues des genres house, techno et electronica.

Pour Collected, Ben Hoo a voulu que chaque morceaux se distinguent des uns des autres grâce à leurs sons différents et à leurs propres histoires. En effet, chaque morceau est le fruit d’une inspiration différente et d’expérimentations sonores dans la création de ses pistes.

Le titre « Marea » ouvre le bal en douceur avec sa vibe deep et son rythme tech-house. Elle est suivie du titre « Run Of Sevens », morceau calme, assez sombre et lancinant avec sa ligne de basse qui vous survole comme un bourdon. Le titre « Night Light », avec ses percussions, dégage un côté tribal et minimal par sa composition. S’en suit le titre déjà connu, « Modal », qui nous transporte dans une atmosphère hypnotique et complexe avec ses sons répétitifs et industriels. Le titre Jasmin est là, pour réchauffer notre cœur. Le rythme tech house made in Ben Hoo, très efficace, est égayé par des nappes jazzy et chaude. Clin d’œil aux mammifères marins dans le morceau « Cetacea » dans lequel des bruits de baleines s’entrelacent dans les kicks et les sons complexes du beat tech house.

Ensuite, le morceau « Duplex » défini très bien un titre deep techno. L’aspect deep est représenté par l’emploi de carillons dissonants qui donnent parfois l’impression qu’ils sont mixés via une platine vinyle que Ben Hoo essaye de caler… Jolie effet de style.

« Maledictum » est un morceau progressif avec une ligne de basse infectieuse et un vocal mystérieux qui hante l’atmosphère déjà lugubre du titre. On reste dans cette ambiance avec l’emploi d’un pad lancinant et profond dans le titre « Nightscape ».
Pour l’atmosphère qui se dégage du morceau d’electronica « Right Kind Of Rain », on n’hésite pas une seconde à penser que l’inspiration est venue d’un jour gris et pluvieux.

Pour finir sur l’univers électronique de Ben Hoo, le morceau posé « Paper Juliet » est un morceau dow-tempo jazzy à l’atmosphère très chill out. Les percussions bien mixées avec l’emploi d’un doux synthé nous emmènent sur une plage illuminée par un coucher de soleil orangé…

Pour clôturer cet album, Ben Hoo a inclut le morceau « collected », ovni de la compilation. Ce morceau de classique contemporain démontre le savoir-faire instrumental du producteur. Il illustre aussi le joli court métrage de Pierre Radua qui présente l’album. A voir ci-dessous :

If there has been a theme running throughout London producer Ben Hoo’s career to date, it’s that he’s never wedded himself to a single style. Techno and house inform his recorded music as much as down-tempo and contemporary classical. From a production perspective, Ben is drawn towards sound manipulation and design. His approach is steeped in audio reconfiguration, which he offsets by creating his own rich synthetic tones. The most substantial example of Ben Hoo’s sonic explorations to date has arrived with ‘Collected’, a 12-track compilation that will see release through Get Physical sub-label, Kindisch.

The collection, which is also Kindisch’s first artist album, brings together original Ben Hoo material from previous EPs ‘Marea’ and ‘Modal’, alongside new and exclusive tracks. Binding the compilation is the title track, a contemporary classical piece composed entirely of sounds, themes and melodies from each of the other tracks on the album. « I wanted the elements presented in a contrasting style to take them away from their original intentions, » says Ben, encapsulating his rich musical range. « This idea is like that of a remix, though it sounds like the opposite the other tracks sound more like remixes of the composition. I created the piece very much with film in mind. » The track is a cinematic masterpiece and, highlighting this quality further, is accompanied by a beautiful short film by french filmmaker Pierre Radua.The body of work is a true testament to Hoo’s extensive musical ability and diversity, exploring techno, deep and tech house, sophisticated electronica and contemporary classical. « ‘Collected’ was not intended as a traditional album, » says Ben. « I wanted each track to stand alone with its own sounds and own story. They were made from vastly different inspirations and a lot of experimentations in modifying audio. »

Opening with Marea (‘tide’ in Spanish), a deep track, relaxed and full of rhythm, the album continues on a journey through Hoo’s rich sonic landscape, moving into ‘Run Of Sevens’ where a laid-back groove is enforced by a cyclic bassline drone. ‘Night Light’ combines tribal and minimal textures, whilst ‘Modal’, a deep, hypnotic piece built around a literal playing of a modal scale and made up of sound designed elements is all about indulging in a mood. Jasmine has a feeling of warmth and optimism, combining tech house beats with sun-drenched jazz chords, and ‘Cetacea’ uses sounds evocative of whale song to create an enchanting soundscape set over complex rhythms. ‘Duplex’ is named as such due to the two very definite energy levels, and moves us into more rugged terrain, combining techno beats with driving, organic chimes.

‘Maledictum’s textures weave and manipulate slowly over time, with a raw pattern and rolling unbroken flow. The piece features a distorted, haunting vocal chant, infectious bassline and epic snare roll. ‘Nightscape’ is rhythm-centric with its deep contemplative chords conjuring images of night time city scenes, whilst ‘Right Kind Of Rain’ is an experimental slice of electronica, encompassing glitch palates, and is almost entirely focused on sound design. The album’s penultimate track ‘Paper Juliet’ is a downtempo jazz infused electric piano lead track which leads us into the sunset, whilst serenaded by tribal beats, before we embark on the final phase of the journey, the stunning, cinematic beauty that is ‘Collected’. ‘Collected’ is not a typical artist album, and it’s fair to say that Ben Hoo’s rise to prominence has been far from typical.

How many young producers could say they’d remixed Fever Ray, Moby, M.A.N.D.Y. & Booka Shade and Tiga before even releasing a solo single? It takes true creative flair to carve out a career solely by interpreting the work of othersand London’s Ben Hoo has done just that. His subsequent EPs for Kindisch showed his enormous potential as a solo artist, and ‘Collected’ will establish Hoo’s place among electronic music’s most promising new talents.

Après cette parenthèse barcelonaise, car le festival Sonar est un rendez-vous annuel incontournable, il est temps de passer à la seconde partie de notre dossier sur le label Tip Tap. La troisième saison de notre podcast va donc se terminer sur une touche espagnole car nous allons prendre, comme chaque été, notre pause pour mieux vous retrouver en septembre avec une quatrième saison. Pour fermer le mois de juin nous avons donc le plaisir d’inviter Cesar Martinez.

Ayant fait ses premières armes dès l’âge de 14 ans, ancien membre d’un collectif de breakbeat nommé Algeciras à Cadiz et prenant l’Andalousie Sud comme origine, c’est à Madrid que Cesar Martinez pose ses valises en 2003 et devient vétéran d’un style drum’n'bass jusqu’à 2009. Techno, minimal et house deviennent alors ses priorités jusqu’à ce qu’il affine sa patte et signe ses productions sur des labels : un de ses remix est même sorti sur Soma, sur un morceau d’Alex Under. Les deux artistes deviennent alors très proches et fondent Cmyk Musik, une approche minimaliste d’un son intimiste. Ses 10 ans d’expérience lui confèrent alors une stature de bonne facture puisqu’il travaille également sur le label Little Bird Records où la tech house devient son style privilégié.

After a short break stormed by the mighty and annual Sonar Festival, it’s time to close our third season and of course the second and last episode of our Tip Tap highlight. Indeed June 2013 signs the last episode of this third season we are close to bliss thanks to those twenty latest instalment which give us enough energy to open a fourth one at fall. Furthermore, we are really happy to host Cesar Martinez for the end of the month exclusively for us.

Starts mixing music in 1999, with 14 years old, in 2001 was part of Energy Rave, breakbeat collective Algeciras (Cadiz) , and began performing at parties in the south Andalusia mixing this style. In 2003 he moves to Madrid and discover the drum & bass, turning to 100% in this style taking part in Spin Buho collective, a group that allowed him to rule over the country and with international artists. In 2009 became interested in music production preferring the sounds of techno, house and minimal. Start editing on various labels, until in 2012 a remix of Alex Under for the prestigious Scottish label Soma Records. Earlier this year starts with Alex working on his label Cmyk Musik, forming part of this great project with over 10 years of experience where performs its more introspective and minimalistic style. Moreover collaborates with Medu in Tip Tap Records showing his warmer face and also works with Little Bird Records where puts a more tech-house style.

His music has a great influence from styles like drum and bass, funk and jazz, giving the subwoofer a lot of movement and using very characteristic sounds.Anyway, when performing their live using multiple controllers midi that allow total management of the sounds of their own track, with 100% of the crop itself, enabling act for the whole Spanish territory in venues such as the Row14 Barcelona , Diamond Club in Madrid or Cosmos club in Seville in the last months.

Boris Vian a écrit « L’Écume des Jours » : au fil du roman le personnage principal se retrouve malade et c’est tout son univers qui rétrécit petit à petit. C’est cette même impression qui nous traverse lorsque nous sommes en manque d’Astropolis. Son cadre idyllique, sa population festive mais souriante, cette cité éphémère où coule à flots une musique intelligente et envoûtante est devenu depuis quelques années notre repère. Un bastion du Grand-Ouest où l’électronique peut se permettre de grandir, de toucher les consciences et de faire la lumière sur une scène régionale en ébullition constante. Astropolis est beaucoup plus qu’un festival : c’est un voyage onirique où seuls les sentiments nous guident, ceux qui nous font tant aimer la musique.

JIMPSTER EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW x FREERANGE RECORDS

Alors que les beaux jours reviennent nous surveillons activement quel serait la bande-son idéale de cet été : pari réussi pour Freerange Records puisque son boss Jimpster vient de sortir un nouvel album baptisé « Porchlight And Rocking Chairs ». Nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir interviewer celui qui fait vibrer le monde deep house depuis plus d’une vingtaine d’années.

Bonjour Jimpster, heureux de vous rencontrer. Votre album est le premier depuis « Amour » en 2006. Comment te sens-tu en ce moment ?

Je suis très heureux d’avoir enfin créé et sorti mon nouveau LP, puisque j’ai passé pas mal de temps à faire des remixs et à jouer donc ça fait du bien de faire de la musique pour mon propre plaisir, sans restrictions ni règles particulières à appliquer, et je suis fier du résultat. Parfois je me dis que j’aimerais être comme ces producteurs qui ne prêtent pas attention à ce que les autres pensent de leur boulot, mais je ne suis pas comme eux et j’ai malgré tout eu pas mal de retours positifs à propos de ce LP de la part de personnes que j’admire énormément, donc même quand les temps sont durs musicalement parlant, je suis reconnaissant et remercie mes proches d’aimer ce que je fais.

En tant que producteur, et pas des moindres, vous êtes l’un de ceux qui ne font pas uniquement de la production, mais vous rassemblez également une certaine énergie et osmose tout au long de vos 23 ans de carrière dans chacun de vos travaux. Quel est votre but, était-ce la musique qui vous guidait quand vous étiez plus jeune ?

Merci pour tous ces compliments ! Oui, la musique a toujours été mon ambition première et je suis assez chanceux de venir d’une famille de musiciens, mon père étant batteur professionnel dans un groupe assez connu de jazz funk/pop, et ma mère une chanteuse de jazz, donc on m’a toujours encouragé à poursuivre ma passion. J’ai commencé à être accro à la musique dès mon plus jeune âge lorsque je faisais du breakdance dans les années 80 et ai souvent été la personne créant et partageant des compilations, et le premier de mes amis à mixer et à jouer. Je pense que le plus intéressant dans tout cela est que j’ai toujours été intéressé à la fois par la production, le live, et l’activité de DJ, ce qui est sans doute la raison pour laquelle j’arrive à rester inspiré et arrive à me revigorer par la musique aujourd’hui, même après autant de temps, puisque si l’on corrèle cela avec le travail que j’effectue au niveau des labels, je pratique plusieurs activités toujours rattachées à la musique, ce qui rend l’ennui impossible.

La musique House n’a jamais été aussi populaire, et Freerange Records en est un très bon support, créant un immense réseau à travers l’Europe ainsi que le reste du monde. A côté de ce succès, que pensez-vous de l’évolution actuelle du label ?

Freerange a été actif pendant 17 ans et c’est maintenant l’un des labels House anglais les plus développés. Cela implique forcément certains problèmes à côté des nombreux avantages remarquables bien sûr. En termes d’avantage, on peut notamment remarquer l’expérience que nous avons acquise au niveau de la dimension business du travail ainsi que notre manière de gérer les à-côtés des faces cachées de la scène comme les backstages. Cependant, l’un des points noirs notables est qu’il est difficile de renouveler les nouveautés et de les rendre plus attrayantes sans pour autant suivre le mouvement ou lasser nos fans. Evidemment, le fait que je joue régulièrement aide énormément, puisque j’essaie toujours de découvrir et de rencontrer de nouveaux producteurs lors de mes voyages, et j’essaye de rester attentif aux nouveautés. Lancer le label Delusions Of Grandeur a été une façon supplémentaire pour nous de rester inspirés, ce qui nous permet d’aller plus loin dans le domaine underground et inusité, ainsi que de nous prouver que nous avons les capacités nécessaires pour découvrir, développer, et aider de nouveaux talents à se lancer.

Le nom de votre nouveau morceau est « Porchlight And Rocking Chairs ». Pourquoi avez-vous nommé votre album ainsi, et comment l’avez-vous produit ?

Le nom m’est venu après que j’aie regardé un documentaire traitant de la musique folk américaine. J’adore ce type de sonorité et le fait que ce soit si caractéristique d’un rythme particulier que l’on n’aurait pas forcément le réflexe d’associer à la House ou à la musique électronique, bien que cela colle parfaitement avec la totalité du LP, de par sa dimension organique, basanée, et toujours dans l’esprit du monde de la nuit.

Jusqu’à il y a quelques années, j’étais un peu dubitatif quant au fait que j’aie la concentration et l’endurance nécessaires à l’établissement d’un nouveau morceau, mais j’ai changé d’état d’esprit dès lors que j’ai eu l’occasion d’emprunter d’anciens synthés à un ami. Dès ce moment, j’ai décidé d’essayer de recycler mes propres instruments afin de créer quelque chose avec, ce qui m’a poussé à les utiliser pour m’amuser à innover avec. J’ai immédiatement redécouvert toutes les possibilités que ces appareils m’offraient et ai également redécouvert le live sous une différente image. Cela est donc devenu ma principale source d’inspiration pour mon LP, tout en étant capable de collaborer avec certains chanteurs, avec lesquels j’ai eu l’occasion de jouer Je voulais vraiment m’éloigner des remixes et des clubs qui focalisaient leur approche sur la production de singles et ai essayé d’étendre mon champ afin d’arriver au format LP, qui a pour concept d’être une écoute plus continue.

Cette sortie est en très bonne adéquation avec l’été qui approche et cela peut être l’occasion pour nous de vous écouter durant nos belles journées ensoleillées. D’ailleurs, qu’attendez-vous de Freerange, et que planifiez-vous pour l’avenir ?

Nous avons prévu beaucoup de sorties dans les mois qui viennent, dont plusieurs remixes de mon LP par KiNK, Andre Lodemann, et Deetron. Nous allons également sortir un EP créé par un nouvel arrivant, nommé Kito Jempere, qui nous vient de St Petersbourg, et qui prévoit un remix de Jacob Korn. Je suis assez accaparé par mon activité en studio pour le prochain EP de Franc Spangler pour Delusions Of Grandeur.

Comme nous sommes en France, y êtes-vous déjà venu ? Y avez-vous un souvenir musical ?

J’ai eu l’occasion de jouer quelques fois en France dans les plus grandes villes, ainsi que dans d’autres endroits plus surprenants. Mes clubs préférés étaient le Rex et le Showcase à Paris, mais j’ai également de bons souvenirs de festivals comme les Transmusicales de Rennes et le Paradise de Nantes. Il y a également un club assez sympa à Lyon, sur un bateau, nommé Le Pearle. En termes de souvenirs, je dirais que je penserais principalement à de belles gueules de bois ; j’ai aussi reçu un soutien-gorge à Los Angeles il y a peu ! Je l’ai cependant rendu à la propriétaire, j’étais assez embarrassé et ne savais pas exactement quoi en faire !

Vos meilleurs et pires moments ?

Une fois, j’ai joué à un festival au sommet d’une montagne au Japon, entouré de nuages, et il pleuvait. Il devait être environ 8h du matin et il y avait exactement 2 personnes dans la foule, les autres s’étant réfugiés à l’abri ou étant en train de dormir. C’était sans doute ma meilleure et à la fois ma pire expérience ! Le Sonar By Night de 2006 était sans doute la performance la plus stressante de par l’effectif du public, mais j’ai été chanceux : j’ai pu camoufler mon énorme stress en arborant une image confiante et joyeuse !

Nous sommes très fiers de parler de votre impressionnante carrière, puisque vous êtes l’un de nos artistes préférés. Y a-t-il des producteurs qui mériteraient d’avoir plus de notoriété d’après vous ?

Il y a beaucoup d’étoiles montantes que j’ai en tête mais uniquement quelques noms qui me viennent à l’esprit ; parmi eux The Black Madonna, New Tower Generation, Glen Astro, Rare Bloom et Gnork.

It’s been a while that we are really amazed by Jimpster. He could be crowned like the king of deep house music but stands for quality : a real man that doesn’t need to be described anymore. He is one of those guys who just make music and spread love all over the world. Between Freerange Records and Delusions of Grandeur, his latest milestone is « Porchlight And Rocking Chairs » ; a great and awesome LP which worth a living.

We had the chance to interview Jimpster. This is an exclusive interview he made for Karisma.

Hi Jimpster, glad to talk to you. Your album has just been launched since « Amour » in 2006. What are your feelings at the moment ?

I feel really happy to have finally got a new LP made and released as I’ve been spending quite a large amount of my time making remixes and gigging so it feels good to be making music for myself, without any restrictions or guidelines and I’m pleased with the outcome. Sometimes I wish I was one of these producers who doesn’t care what anyone else thinks about their work but I’m not and I’ve been getting a lot of lovely feedback about the LP from guys who I greatly admire so even in these difficult times trying to sell music I can be thankful that my peers appreciate it at least.

As a producer, and an inspiring one, you are one of those who are not just producing, but gathering great energy and bliss into your 23 years career in each of your works. What’s the aim of that stuff, music was your leading aim when you were young ?

Thanks for the nice words! Yeah, music was always my ambition and I’m lucky enough to come from a very musical family with my dad being a professional drummer from quite a well known jazz funk/pop band and my mum is a gigging jazz singer so I was always encouraged to follow my passion. I started getting addicted to collecting music from a young age during my breakdancing years in the mid-eighties and would often be the one making and sharing mixtapes and the first of my friends to start mixing and playing gigs. I guess the interesting thing is that I was always interested in both production, performance and DJing in equal measures which is probably why it comes quite easily for me to remain so inspired and energised by music today, even after all this time because if you include the work I do on the labels as well I actually have quite a lot of varied jobs within music so I never get bored.

House music has never been such popular today and Freerange Records is a very nice outfit, spreading an immense stardom through Europe and the rest of the world. Behind that success, what do you think about the label nowadays ?

Freerange has been running for 17 years now and has become one of the more established house labels from the UK. This brings with it certain problems as well as benefits of course. Benefits include the experience we now have in terms of the business side of things and how to manage the more behind the scenes aspects of running a label but one of the downsides is how to keep things fresh and exciting without jumping on bandwagons or alienating our existing fans. Obviously the fact that I’m regularly DJing helps greatly as I’m always discovering and meeting new producers on my travels and I try and keep my ear to the ground when it comes to checking new stuff. Setting up our sister label Delusions Of Grandeur was another way for us to keep invigorated and inspired, enabling us to push slightly more underground or leftfield sounds and also to prove to ourselves that we have a talent for picking up, developing and helping to establish new talent.

The name of new full-length is « Porchlight And Rocking Chairs ». Why did you named the album like this and how have you produced it ?

The name came to me after after watching a documentary on American folk music. I love the sound of it and the fact that it’s so descriptive of a particular vibe that you wouldn’t normally associate with house or electronic music but it still seems to work with the overall sound of the LP, being quite organic, loose in places and with a dusky, nightime feel.

Up until a couple of years ago I was pretty unsure about whether I had the focus and stamina to work a new full length but it all changed as soon as I borrowed a few old analogue synths from a friend and then decided to bring out some older hardware of my own from storage and have some fun jamming with it. I soon rediscovered the tactility and more random beauty you get from pressing record and playing live as opposed to quantizing the hell out of a plug in. This became the inspiration for the LP along with being able to collaborate with a couple of vocalists which I’d been meaning to work with for some time. I definitely wanted to take a step away from the remix and club focussed approach of making singles and tried to stretch things out a bit in the context of the LP format which would work as a continuous listen.

That’s a very nice release as summer is getting closer and closer and it might be the occasion to listening it during this sunny time. By the way, what did you expect for Freerange and yourself in the future ?

We have a really strong bunch of releases coming out in the following months including remixes of my LP from KiNK, Andre Lodemann and Deetron. We also have an EP coming from a newcomer called Kito Jempere from St Petersburg which comes with a Jacob Korn remix. I’m busy in the studio working on my next Franc Spangler EP for Delusions Of Grandeur.

As we’re based in France, have you ever been there ? Any gig souvenirs ?

I’ve played many times in France in most of the major cities as well as some of the more remote and smaller places. Rex and Showcase in Paris are particular favourites but I also have great memories of festivals such as Transmusicale in Renne and Paradise in Nantes. There’s also a great club on a boat in Lyon called Le Pearle that was fun. In terms of souvenirs I think it would mainly just be nasty hangovers although I did get a bra thrown at me in Los Angeles recently! I gave it back though as I was quite embarrassed and didn’t know what to do with it!

Your best and worst festival moment ?

I played a festival on a mountain top in Japan once where it was covered by clouds and raining. It was something like 8 in the morning and there were exactly 2 people in the crowd as everyone was taking cover or sleeping. That was probably the best and the worst experience at the same time! Sonar By Night in 2006 was possibly one of the most nerve racking in terms of size of crowd and having to deliver but luckily I’m quite good at looking like I’m happy and confident even if I’m scared to death!

We are very proud to talk about your amazing career as you are one of our lovely artist. Are there any producers who worth to be known in your opinion ?

There’s a lot of up and coming people that I have my eye on but a few names that spring to mind are The Black Madonna, New Tower Generation, Glen Astro, Rare Bloom and Gnork.

Everyone knows june is a perfect starter for a sunny and warm summer. Despite the lack of a good weather in Paris it’s the perfect way to fly away and going to Barcelona for the Sonar Festival. As the city has inspired a lot of artists and labels, we feel the need to have some words about a great man. We are working very tightly with him since early this year and we are very proud to follow him through his career and boundaries he’s trying to push forward into the house music industry.

Regarding this forthcoming showcase at Barcelona, we had the pleasure to interview the nice Terence. Full details below.

Hello Terence ! Still a pleasure to write to you since we are working together this year : La Vie En Rose is a very slightly emotional outfit for music lovers and we were very happy about the release from Javier Carballo. What are your forthcoming projects upon your label ?

Hi Karisma, well after the nice responses we had from the three last releases ( Hanfry Martinez EP, John Dimas LP, Javier Carballo EP), i have to say that im really happy about the next LVR09 , it’s gonna be Boris Horel (from Eklo to name a few), with a really special remix by the new talented London Band Acid Mondays. Plus we have some really interesting releases coming too…

We saw that you are hardly linked with Spain … What’s your story about this country and why are you so involved with the music industry there ?

I decided to move with my gf in Madrid to create our press Fashion Agency (www.audreyterenceagency.com). i have always played in Spain, also a lot in Ibiza with my DJ agency crew Lola ED. I love this country, the way and quality of life so far….
Im not so involved in the music industry here as im running the label between Paris and Madrid. we are starting to make parties in Madrid with my friends Roberto Martin from Fact and my partner Jordi from our party AvantGarde. we had Dan Ghenacia and Livio & Roby who came down recently.

We were at the Sonar Festival last year and we have really enjoyed the Half Baked party. It’s amazing to see you playing this year during the Off sessions but is it the first time that you will come ?

No I’ve been playing to Sonar really often, Half Baked vs Lola ED last year was wicked when I went back to back with Franck Roger, but yes this year will be the first Showcase of my Label La Vie En Rose vs Overall Music, my Canarian family. It’s at an amazing venue in front of the beach called Cdlc, we will have artists from both labels: John Dimas, Hanfry Martinez, Adam Shelton, Javier Carballo and a special guest from Apollonia. We are so excited about that, these two young labels are growing and it’s a big opportunity for us.

We have the feeling that you are working alone but Lola ED isn’t so far away from you … what is your relationship with the agency, do you feel the need to entertain your label with Lola ?

Yes of course, when i moved to Spain i was thinking about that but you know we all grew up together in Paris making our sound and imprint, and now many of us are living in different european countries. With the internet we are talking all the time and sharing ideas every days. All the Lola ED artists with their own labels are working with the agency, finding the best way for them.

We know what the label is but regarding yourself … Have you some materials to be signed soon ?

Yes the main idea concerning La Vie En Rose was to develop something new, with a new crew of talented artists who were following me in the past. Now we are almost at the 10th release and yes of course we will have an EP from myself as soon as posible on La Vie En Rose. Also I’m finishing a remix for Alex Arnout for Dogmatik, and also an EP for Turquoise Blue.

Some few words to cap off this interview ?

Yes we are really looking forward to our Showcase at Off Sonar 2013 with a lot of emotion and energy. Over the last year I’ve been working hard for the label, i hope that the audience will notice it and enjoy our party in Barcelona.

Juin 2013. Dernier label à promouvoir pour la saison, fin de la saison 3 du podcast. Ce sont encore une fois 10 mois qui se sont écoulés trop vite, mais 10 mois de découverte et de curiosité musicale qui nous ont permis de vous faire plaisir et d’élargir vos connaissances. Pour terminer cette saison en beauté nous prenons le cap pour l’Espagne et sa chaleur avec le label d’un de nos amis : Tip Tap.

Marqué par une identité deep tech house, ce label est une force majeure dans la région de Malaga, là où est originaire son boss Medu. Actif au niveau des sorties et toujours présent dans la qualité Tip Tap se veut fédérateur de bonnes vibes.

Boss du Label Tip Tap Records, Medu a une une touche bien personnelle quand il sagit de s’exprimer en Musique. Talentueux producteur influencé par Detroit, Chicago et la techno underground des années 90. il commence par se produire en live analogique et percu acoustique en 2007 . Avec un son bien avant guardiste , il créé l ‘année suivante Bicoma et part dans la capitale Allemande ou il signera son premier ep en vinyl sur ‘Eintakt’ et ou il jouera dans quelques un des meilleur club de la ville.

La même année, un de ses tracks sera numéro 1 des ventes beatport pendant quelques semaines, Medu commence a faire du bruit et ce n’est que le début. Il travaille actuellement sur son label : Tip Tap Records et prépare quelques sorties pour le label de Marc Antona : Dissonant , Organic -Music et quelques surprises reste a venir .

June 2013. Last label of the season, and the end of our third season regarding our podcast. It has been a little while but we are still there to spread the word about house music and no one else could say that we are not so really involved into that genre : our third season is standing as a representative outfit to the last ten months of joy and bliss towards the music we are sharing daily for you. Anyway, for this last month we are going to Spain with a very nice imprint which worth the glance : Tip Tap.

Built accross some deep and tech house stuff this spanish outfit was created by Medu, one of our friends here at Karisma. Spreading the word around Malaga, quality and punchy basslines are melt together for a very rare and leading groove which doesn’t need to be describe further. This is the kind of label we aim to schedule, especially for a friend. Medu is our first guest of the month.

Head of Tip Tap Records, really involved into music and the aesthetics of deep and punchy one, Medu is a skilled producer and shares easily his music with very nice party people. Influenced by Detroit, Chicago and the underground techno of the nineties, he began to produce through some analogic hardware and acoustic percussions in 2007.

With a very flashforward sound he has created Bicoma and went to Berlin. There he has released his first 12” on Eintakt and played in a few great clubs of the german capital. The same year one of his tracks has been number one in the Beatport chart during a bunch of weeks.

Actually he is working on his Ti Tap outfit and some of his works will be released under the label of Marc Antona : Dissonant. Other works are also on the pipeline for Organic Music and else.

Tout ce beau linge sur un même plateau est une chose rare, enfin, pas vraiment pour Katapult chez qui ces messieurs ont leurs habitudes, depuis tant d’années de collaboration ils sont littéralement chez eux, ce qui en plus de leurs prestations toujours fracassantes crée cette atmosphère unique, une énorme fête de potes avec les plus gros killers aux platines!

Des pointures mondiales il n’y a pas grand chose à dire d’autre, chacun son style son histoire, en partie commune pour BABY FORD et THOMAS MELCHIOR au sein de SOUL CAPSULE, Trelik records, Aspect music et de la galaxie IFACH de Londres.

RICARDO VILLALOBOS vous connaissez l’histoire il fait partie du top top dj, et il a la fantaisie pour lui..

On ne peut pas écrire 100 lignes ni mettre un plus que l’autre en avant, ce sont 3 monstres sacrés de la scène électronique, musiciens exceptionnels et grands djs, des légendes bien vivantes qui remettent les pendules à l’heure tous les week-ends..

Comble du luxe, tout cela va se dérouler à l’Electric, porte de versailles, de l’apéro au petit déjeuner, terrasse géante, vue panoramique sur Paris, parquet top dance, on va être bien!

Ouverture des portes à 18H00 pour un apéro on espère au soleil !

Le camion bazar sera présent, des stands de nourriture divers et variés, de la vente de disques, etc…

Un petit village à ciel ouvert avec vue sur Paris, des transats, des grandes tables, du funktion one

Ok party people in the house, you know these guys right? just think that this will take place in a crazy beautiful location, the best in Paris actually, we can’t really imagine this party as something different than just perfect…

Les labels parisiens, résidents du rex club, continuent l’accueil des pionniers de la house music . En mai, le label Bass Culture a reçu Dan Curtin (http://www.insidekarisma.fr/2013/05/22/purveyors-of-fine-funk-how-dark-is-your-deepness-bass-culture/ ) et ça continue en juin avec l’accueil du pionnier house Jordan Fields par le label Hold Youth.
Producteur prolifique depuis les années 90’s, sa musique aux couleurs disco et à l’accent de Chicago a marqué les emblématiques labels Double Down, Track Mode et Aroma. Aujourd’hui, sa musique a évolué et on peut distinguer deux facettes de l’univers musical de Jordan Fields. D’un côté une house disco groovy avec son chaud grain old-school et de l’autre une techno aux sonorités plus froides et distordues.

A l’origine, Seuil Et Le loup, grands amateurs de house music et grands collectionneurs de galettes ont contacté Mr Fields pour réédité en vinyle son fameux titre « Garage Daze Revisited ». Finalement ce titre sera bien sur re-pressé mais sera suivi de trois autres morceaux inédits qui dévoilent l’étendu du talent de ce grand nom de la scène house de Chicago.

Dès les premières secondes, le titre « Garage Daze Revisited » nous replonge dans l’atmosphère chaude et humide de la grande époque de la Chicago House. Avec son synthé funky, ses nappes atmosphérique acidulées et sa ligne de basse bien punchy, ce titre a bien vieilli et ravira autant les foules qu’à la belle époque.

On reste dans la même ambiance moite et groovy avec le second titre « What Your Mind Can Conceive ». Les synthés et le pad utilisés, couplés au vocal répétitif, donnent une touche deep-house à ce morceau.

La face B de cet EP bascule dans l’autre aspect de l’univers de Jordan Fields que l’on évoquait plus haut. Le morceau « Ana’s dream » est dès le début plus froid, les sons qui s’enchainent ensuite sont sales et brutes. L’aspect techno expérimentale et industrielle aux influences de Détroit ressort avec brio de ce titre.

Le morceau « Blue Pacific » conclut cet EP sur un rythme down-tempo. Moins industriel que le titre précèdent, les sons utilisés sont froids et lugubres. L’utilisation de voies et d’un synthé mixées avec beaucoup d’écho donne une atmosphère intrigante et sombre à ce dernier titre.

The prolific 90’s house producer, carving out a sound somewhere between disco and Chicago, Jordan Fields is the latest pioneering artist to press on the ever-accelerating Parisian label, Hold Youth.

Esteemed for productions on the legendary Double Down, Track Mode, Aroma, and Brothers’ Vibe’s SOM Recordings, Fields marked a new epoch with ‘Boxbeater’ EP released on Rush Hour last year. Back for more ‘Ana’s Dream’ is a well varied 4-track package, travelling through solid disco-house, to the outright unclassifiable, to the more floaty and serene.

Vinyl experts Le Loup and Seuil AKA Hold Youth, approached Fields initially for a repress of a forgotten gem ‘Garage Daze Revisited’. Embracing nostalgia for their musical roots but all the while conscious of pushing things forward, their modern touch comes in the form of a new extended edit Fields made at their special request.

Title track ‘Anna’s Dream’ equally brings out the best of the old to create an outstanding new. A previously unreleased production from a young and experimental Jordan Fields, its dirty, raw sound is down to the exclusive edit being made from the original cassette tape.

To top off each side of the vinyl, two brand new tracks commissioned for the label – the uplifting and catchy vocals on ‘What Your Mind Can Conceive’ makes it the perfect summer warmer, while ‘Blue Pacific’ transports you somewhere deep and murky for an altogether more psychedelic experience.

Pour cette HELLO nous invitons nos amis du très bon label berlinois WHITE MUSIC. Nous fêterons également l’anniversaire de notre résident PEPPERPOT. Une double occasion pour venir faire la fête avec nous jusqu’au bout de la nuit…

NU est un véritable phénomène !!! Ce péruvien qui vit à Berlin est un nomade des temps modernes… Seul ou en collaboration avec Acid Pauli, sa musique a fait le tour du monde en s’inspirant et s’enrichissant de continent en continent. Posées sur de solides rythmes, la diversité des productions de cet ingénieur du son mélangent des instruments acoustiques à des sons profonds et envoutants. En moins de 3 ans NU a publié 4 projets de LIVE sur Soundcloud qui ont générés 450 000 écoutes !!!! “La Primavera” reste pour nous la grosse claque de 2012. La quasi totalité des morceaux de ce live ont depuis été signés sur Crostown Rebels, White, Bar 25, Kindisch, Dantze… Un artiste rare à Paris qui jouera pour la première fois au Rex.

Artiste fort apprécié en France, le berlinois OSKAR OFFERMANN revient à une HELLO pour notre plus grand plaisir. La qualité musicale de ses DJ sets et le buzz grandissant autour de cet artiste l’amène à jouer dans les meilleurs clubs européens. Pour son retour au Rex, il nous fera découvrir ses dernières réalisations, ou re-découvrir son excellent premier album “Do Pilots Still Dream Of Flying?” sorti il y a quelques mois sur son label WHITE MUSIC.

L’Australie sera représentée par MURAT KILIC. Outre de belles productions sur de nombreux labels (Stil Vor Talent, Kaato Music, Beef Records…), il est considéré comme l’un des meilleur Dj de son pays. Son dernier passage dans la capitale l’année dernière avait fait l’unanimité… De retour en Europe pour une tournée de 10 dates, il était donc évident qu’il repasse par la case HELLO. Un artiste du bout du monde à découvrir ou à re-découvrir…

Le napolitain Cipy est de retour sur Kindisch, et ce pour notre plus grand plaisir ! En effet, son « Your Fifteen Sexy Heel » EP, sorti en 2012, n’était pas tombé dans l’oreille de sourds. Tout comme , il faut bien le souligner, la plupart des sorties du label qui a tout de même signé des artistes confirmé tels que Jay Haze, le duo « M.A.N.D.Y. » ou autre Riva Starr.

D’entrée de jeu, Cipy marque un point : le premier morceau, « Breakfast In Sydenham » s’avère être très sensuel et est tout sauf mièvre. Le style n’est d’ailleurs pas sans nous rappeler un certain Loco Dice, qui est le compagnon de route d’un autre napolitain, Marco Carola. La surprise du morceau vient du « leading vocal ». La voix de Kara Square est tout simplement merveilleuse et nous emmène dans un doux rêve que l’on ne veut pas quitter.

Ça tombe bien : elle chante également sur « And The Warmth Comes Up » qui est une magnifique ballade de deep-house accompagnée d’un beat ravageur. Cipy semble avoir trouvé son ton et il nous va à ravir. De nos jours, créer une atmosphère comme celle-ci sans tomber dans le cliché relève de l’exploit et cet EP remporte le challenge haut la main.

Il se paie même le luxe de nous surprendre à nouveau avec un troisième morceau qui contraste clairement avec les deux précédents. Cette fois, la volonté de Cipy est claire : nous faire danser. Et, à grands coups de kicks et de boucles hypnotiques, il y parvient. « Better & Worse » est donc la conclusion idéale à cet EP ravageur.

Cipy appeared last year on Kindisch with his very intimate ‘Your Fifteen Sexy Heel’ EP, marking the day we fell in love with the Italian-born producer. A few months later, he’s back, with ‘Breakfast In Sydenham’

The title track is the product of a weekend in Sydenham, London. ‘Breakfast In Sydenham’ plays with ambient vocals dipped heavily in effects, creating a mind bending atmosphere full of energy and power. And then the lead vocals arrive, sealing the deal and creating that perfect moment you will remember years from now.

‘And The Warmth Comes Up’ begins with a cold synth and bass line combo, teasing percussion over the top and creating tense air. It continues to reveal more tech house delight and, as the title hints, it warms up to become a very acceptable early morning floor filler.

‘Better&Worse’ rounds off the EP with an upbeat vibe with tech house influences. He keeps the energy going with very organic sounds and rhythmic leads. Cipy managed to deliver another high quality release, with all the tracks fitting and complimenting each other very well.
